HOW MUCH DOES IT
COST TO START A
PHOTO BOOTH BUSINESS?
Probably less than you think — especially if you start with a simple iPad photo booth setup instead of trying to buy every piece of equipment you might eventually want.
That's a reasonable ballpark for somebody putting together a professional-looking iPad photo booth setup without going crazy on equipment from day one.
YOU DON'T NEED
A $10,000
STARTUP BUDGET.
For a basic digital iPad photo booth business, your biggest purchases are usually the physical booth, an iPad if you don't already have one, and photo booth software.
Printers, backdrops, props, upgraded lighting and extra booths can all come later. They are nice to have. They are not all required before you book your first event.
WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY
COST TO GET STARTED?
The exact number depends on what you already own and how elaborate you want your first setup to be. But these are the main things I'd budget for.
PHOTO BOOTH
This is the physical booth your guests will actually see and use. A good booth should look professional, travel well and give you dependable lighting.
iPAD
Already own a compatible iPad? Great. Your startup cost just went down. If not, you don't necessarily need the most expensive model.
PHOTO BOOTH SOFTWARE
This runs the guest experience — taking photos, GIFs or boomerangs, collecting information and delivering images.
BUSINESS BASICS
Think domain name, simple website, business registration, insurance and other basics. Your needs vary depending on where and how you operate.
BACKDROP
Optional at first. Plenty of events already have great walls, décor or spaces you can use. You can always add backdrop options once bookings justify them.
PROPS
Also optional. Digital props, simple signs or no props at all can work just fine when you're getting started.
PRINTER
Don't buy one just because you think a photo booth has to print. A digital-only booth is a completely legitimate way to start.
MARKETING
You can spend money on ads, but you can also start with social media, local networking, referrals and good old-fashioned hustle.

WHAT CAN A COUPLE
OF BOOKINGS DO?
Startup cost matters. But so does what the equipment can earn.
Let's use the same simple example: two $600 events.
That's why I wouldn't obsess over having every accessory before you start.
Get the core setup. Get it working. Get booked.
THE FASTEST WAY
TO BLOW YOUR
STARTUP BUDGET.
It's really easy to spend money in this business.
You start looking at printers. Then backdrops. Then props. Then another light. Then a fancy cart. Then a second backdrop stand. Pretty soon you've bought half a storage unit and still haven't booked an event.
I'd rather see somebody start with a clean, professional booth and put the rest of their energy into actually getting customers.
Once people are paying you, let the business help pay for the upgrades.
Revenue first. Gear second.
PHOTO BOOTH BUSINESS
STARTUP FAQ.
HOW MUCH MONEY DO I NEED TO START A PHOTO BOOTH BUSINESS?
A reasonable starting budget for a basic professional iPad photo booth setup is roughly $1,500 to $3,500. You can spend more, especially if you add printing, premium backdrops and other equipment immediately.
DO I NEED A PRINTER TO START?
No. A digital-only photo booth can send photos, GIFs and boomerangs directly to guests. Printing can always be added later if your customers want it.
DO I NEED AN EXPENSIVE CAMERA?
Not if you're starting with an iPad booth. The iPad itself acts as the camera, touchscreen and computer for the booth.
CAN I START A PHOTO BOOTH BUSINESS FROM HOME?
Yes. Many photo booth businesses are mobile businesses. You store the equipment at home, transport it to events and handle bookings and administration online.
WHAT SHOULD I BUY FIRST?
I'd start with the physical booth, a compatible iPad and photo booth software. Those three pieces give you the core system you need to begin building an actual photo booth service.
CAN I ADD PRINTING LATER?
Absolutely. That's one of the easiest ways to grow. Start digital, learn the business and add a printer when the demand and revenue justify it.
